Just in time for the season of fallen leaves, Eamon McGrath has released nine songs full of
melancholy and reflectiveness. I saw him open for The Dirty Nil last year in Winnipeg and his countryesque style was a nice contrast to the euphoric guitars of Luke Bentham. So with "Guts" the songwriter from Edmonton releases a record that his European label fondly files under "Canadiana". And that is actually the perfect word to describe it. This record is full of moments that feel like snowflakes slowly covering you when you walk among a long and winding river in winter. No surprise that it was recorded in Winnipeg where producer John Paul Peters (Tanya Tagaq, Propagandhi) did a great job in the Private Ear Studios. The final mix happened in Toronto with Braden Sauder at Marquee Sound. The opening of the record is mellow and to the sound of piano and drums, Eamon McGrath draws you in with his lyrics. His voice is very versatile, hitting higher notes as in "To Only Drink Water" and crooning in a velvety way in "City By The Lake". The "Unsung Warsong" conveys vibes in the key of Bruce Springsteen, whereas "Roadside Angel" features pedal steel guitars that evoke pictures of the prairies. "Everybody just wants a way to find love", Eamon McGrath sings. Even if that's something hard to imagine in times like these, he might be right about that.
