Aus Tom Gabel wird Laura Jane Grace: Against Me!-Sänger outet sich als transsexuell

Tom Gabel, Sänger der amerikanischen Punkrocker Against Me!, hat sich im Interview mit dem Rolling Stone als transsexuell geoutet. Wie das Magazin am 8. Mai berichtete, werde Gabel bald mit der Einnahme von Hormonen beginnen. Auch seinen bisherigen Namen wird der Sänger ablegen und gegen den Namen Laura Jane Grace eintauschen. An der Ehe mit seiner Frau Heather wird sich nichts ändern. Tom Gabel sieht diesem Prozess auch ängstlich entgegen. Dem Rolling Stone sagte er: "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," says Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind." Die komplette Geschichte kann man ab 11. Vor diesem Hintergrund ergeben manche Songs der Band auf einmal einen neuen Sinn. "The Ocean" etwa vom 2007er-Album "New Wave". Da singt Tom Gabel: "And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman/My mother once told me she would have named me Laura/I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her/One day, I'd find an honest man to make my husband/We would have two children, build our home on the Gulf of Mexico/Our family would spend hot summer days at the beach together/The sun would kiss our skin as we played in the sand and water/And we would know we loved each other without having to say it."

Reaktionen haben nicht lange auf sich warten lassen. Via Twitter unterstützen The Gaslight Anthem Tom Gabel mit einem Zitat aus seinem Solo-Song "Harsh Realms":  "It's a harsh realm... don't abandon me." - we got you buddy. Auf ihrem Tumblr widmen sich Brian Fallon und Co. diesem Thema ausführlicher. "So Tom’s gonna be Laura now… and in 2012 I still find people on the internet commenting  on another persons life how they insult and condemn a person for his choices." Wer sich die Kommentare zum Artikel bei Punknews anschaut, dem wird klar, wovon The Gaslight Anthem reden.

Auf seine unnachahmliche Art hat NoFX-Chef Fat Mike die Nachricht kommentiert:  "It makes sense now why Against Me called me last week and asked if they could cover My Vagina."
